USE OF CORTICOSTEROIDS IN THE MANAGEMENT OF IN-HOSPITAL SEPSIS: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Sepsis is a potentially fatal condition, characterized by a dysregulated response of an individual's immune system to an infection anywhere in the human body. This condition can progress to septic shock, defined by persistent hypotension even after adequate volume replacement. Sepsis represents one of the biggest causes of in-hospital death, and its treatment is crucial for a good patient prognosis. Due to its complexity and exacerbated response to infection, studies are investigating what would be the ideal treatment for this condition. The present study aims to analyze the effectiveness of corticosteroids as an adjunct in treatment, evaluating the response of the affected patient considering their clinical effects and their impact on the patients' prognosis.
