CARCINOMA IN THE THIRD EYELID OF A BOVINE ANIMAL: A CASE REPORT

Abstract

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common ocular neoplasm in cattle, with high incidence in regions exposed to intense solar radiation. This study aimed to report a clinical case of SCC in the third eyelid of a bovine, attended at a rural property in Espigão do Oeste, Rondônia, Brazil, in 2025. The clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures adopted were described. The animal presented an elevated, ulcerated, and keratinized mass in the third eyelid, accompanied by epiphora and blepharospasm. After clinical and ophthalmic examination, nictitating membrane removal (nictitectomy) was performed under physical restraint, sedation, and periorbital local anesthesia, followed by a postoperative protocol with systemic antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and topical antibiotic eye drops. Histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma with tumor-free surgical margins. The animal showed good postoperative recovery and no signs of recurrence during the initial follow-up period. This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis, histopathological confirmation, and appropriate surgical intervention for disease control, as well as the adoption of preventive measures in rural properties, especially in regions with high solar exposure.
