AMARTYA SEN'S DEVELOPMENT THOUGHT AND HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO FAMILY FARMING

Abstract

This article analyzes the contributions of capabilities theory, developed by Amartya Sen, to the understanding and strengthening of family farming. By redefining development as the expansion of individuals’ substantive freedoms, Sen offers a robust theoretical basis for critically reflecting on public policies aimed at rural areas. The research shows how programs for access to land, water, credit, education, and technical training can be reassessed in light of this approach, highlighting the importance of political participation, empowerment, and the valorization of farmers’ autonomy. Family farming, in this context, is understood not only as an economic sector, but as a space for the construction of social justice, emancipation, and sustainability. By articulating theory and practice, the study proposes that strengthening human capabilities should be the central axis of public policies for rural areas, contributing to a more just and inclusive rural development that is aligned with contemporary demands.
