BEYOND ACCELERATED: UNDERSTANDING HYPERTHYROIDISM AND ITS PREDISPOSING FACTORS

Abstract

Hyperthyroidism is an endocrine condition characterized by the excessive production and release of thyroid hormones (thyroxine [T4] and triiodothyronine [T3]) by the thyroid gland. These hormones play a crucial role in regulating metabolism, affecting practically all systems in the body. Understanding the etiology and pathophysiology of hyperthyroidism is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of the disease. Given the great importance of the topic, this narrative literature review brought together articles from the main databases in order to point out the possible risk factors for the development of hyperthyroidism. It was concluded that hyperthyroidism is a complex condition with multiple causes and a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations. Its etiology ranges from autoimmune diseases to autonomous thyroid nodules and iatrogenic effects. A detailed understanding of these processes is crucial for the effective management of hyperthyroidism, allowing for targeted therapeutic interventions to mitigate symptoms and prevent severe complications.
