Introduction: Self-medication with anxiolytics has become a concerning practice among university students in the health field, reflecting the impact of academic stress, emotional pressures, and the ease of access to information about medications. This behavior may lead to significant risks, such as dependence, drug interactions, and the masking of psychological disorders. Objective: To analyze the incidence of self-medication with anxiolytics among university students in the health field and the nursing strategies for education and support. Methods: This is an integrative literature review. The SciELO and LILACS databases were used as research sources, including full-text articles published between 2021 and 2025, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. For article selection, an evaluation was conducted based on reading the title, abstract, and full text. For data distribution and analysis, a table was prepared. Results: The results showed that self-medication with anxiolytics among health students is mainly associated with factors such as academic pressure and demands combined with a high workload, stress, anxiety, and concerns about the future. Aspects such as financiais difficulties, lack of leisure, sleep problems, family distancing, dissatisfaction with the course, and fragile interpersonal relationships also stood out as motivating factors. It was also observed that easy access to medications, previous knowledge about drugs, and the search for improved academic performance significantly contribute to this practice. Conclusion: The practice of self-medication is significant and requires professional attention. Nursing interventions can reduce inappropriate behaviors, strengthening comprehensive mental health care in the university environment and encouraging institutional policies for prevention and student follow-up.
