Abstract

Introduction: Breastfeeding for premature infants is essential for their development and recovery, as breast milk contains vital nutrients and immune factors that are specially adapted to their nutritional needs. Objective: To analyze the importance of breastfeeding in cases of prematurity, highlighting its benefits, challenges, and the practices that promote its use in neonatal care. Methodology: An integrative review of 15 studies published between 2018 and 2025, selected from national and international databases, using inclusion criteria focused on premature infants and breastfeeding practices during and after hospitalization. Results: There is evidence of the protective role of breast milk, which promotes beneficial intestinal colonization, modulates the immune system, and reduces the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis and systemic infections. Furthermore, studies showed an association between breastfeeding and better clinical and neurological outcomes, such as shorter hospital stays and improved cognitive and motor development. Conclusion: Breastfeeding is an essential practice for the recovery and healthy development of premature newborns, but it requires supportive policies, professional training, and continuous follow-up.
