Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the biggest concerns in public health, worsening the quality of life and the effectiveness of treatment for infectious diseases, especially in hospital settings. This study analyzed AMR in ICUs in Manaus, focusing on the main multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria, such as Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii. A narrative bibliographic review was conducted, collecting data from studies published between 2020 and 2025. Inclusion criteria included peer-reviewed articles on bacterial resistance in ICUs in Manaus and regions with similar characteristics. Exclusion criteria included studies that did not directly address AMR or did not specify data on bacterial resistance in ICUs. A total of 10 articles were included. The results revealed an alarming prevalence of resistance, especially to carbapenems, last-line drugs. It was identified that these bacteria are frequently associated with severe complications in patients hospitalized in ICUs. The importance of continuous monitoring, such as Amazonas' participation in BR-GLASS, and the implementation of more effective public health policies were highlighted. The conclusion pointed to the urgency of implementing stringent infection control measures in hospitals.
