Introduction: Care in emergency units demands organization, agility, and humanized care, making the nurse's role essential to ensuring quality and safety. Practical experience in this environment fosters the integration of theory and practice, contributing to academic and professional development. Objective: To report the experience of an extracurricular internship in a hospital emergency room, highlighting the lessons learned in humanized care and the development of essential nursing skills. Methods: This is a descriptive, experience-report study, based on the practical experience of a nursing student in a private hospital. The analysis was based on personal records and dialogue with scientific literature published between 2020 and 2025. Results: The internship enabled the development of skills such as effective communication with patients, family members, and the multidisciplinary team; managing emotions in stressful situations; prioritizing care during triage; rapid recognition of emergencies; and agility in technical procedures. The importance of continuing education, theory-practice integration, and the appreciation of humanized care, even in the face of healthcare pressure, were also highlighted. Conclusion: The experience fostered the improvement of technical and emotional skills, expanding students' autonomy, self-confidence, and decision-making ability. Furthermore, it reinforced the importance of nurses as leaders in emergency care, highlighting that care must be guided by ethics, empathy, and patient-centeredness, strengthening the development of professionals better prepared for hospital challenges.
