HUMANIZATION IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT: CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE INTENSIVE CARE

Abstract

Introduction: The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is an essential environment for the care of critically ill patients, where medical care is highly technological. However, the humanization of care, which seeks to address not only the physical needs but also the emotional and psychological needs of patients, is often a neglected dimension. Humanization in the ICU aims to improve the experience of patients and their families, promoting more welcoming and respectful care. The implementation of humanizing practices, such as active listening and effective communication, faces challenges in an environment predominantly focused on technology and a mechanistic biomedical culture. Objectives:The objective of this study is to analyze the challenges and strategies to improve humanization in intensive care within ICUs, highlighting best practices and the barriers found in the implementation of these strategies. Methodology: The research is carried out through a narrative literature review, analyzing articles and studies already published on the theme of humanization in the ICU. The analysis addresses both the positive aspects of implementing humanizing practices and the difficulties faced by health professionals and institutions in promoting this type of care. Results and discussion: This study contributes to the identification of the main obstacles to humanization in the Intensive Care Unit, such as work overload and the predominance of a technicist approach, in addition to presenting strategies that foster dialogue, welcoming, and strengthening of relationships between the team, patients, and families. Conclusion: It is concluded that humanization in the ICU requires integrated actions: a cultural change that values listening, welcoming, and shared decision-making, along with structural adjustments that reduce professional overload and ensure adequate resources. The implementation of these strategies improves the experience of patients and families and contributes to the quality of care and the well-being of the healthcare team.
