Abstract

This research analyzes the relevance of basic financial education for high school students in public schools in the face of contemporary economic and social challenges. Considering the vulnerability of many Brazilian families and the growing access to credit and consumption, the urgency of adopting educational practices that promote financial autonomy and economic citizenship becomes evident. This is a bibliographic and documentary study, based on recent works and official documents such as the National Strategy for Financial Education (ENEF) and the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC). The results indicate that, when addressed in a transversal and critical way, financial education fosters conscious decision-making about consumption, planning, and money management, generating impacts that go beyond the classroom and reach families and communities. However, challenges remain regarding teacher training, the lack of specific teaching materials, and the continuity of public policies. It is concluded that financial education in public high schools is a strategic instrument for preventing early indebtedness and promoting social transformation, contributing to reducing inequalities and strengthening economic citizenship. This study contributes to the debate on consolidating financial education as an educational public policy in Brazil.
