For the research, a review of the scientific literature was performed, where the search for scientific articles identified in the Online Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System (MEDLINE) and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS) databases was performed.), Nursing Databases (BDENF), Public Medline (pubmed), CAPES Periodicals, in addition to the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), published in the specific period between 2011 and 2017. following keywords: medicine; pharmaceutical; health waste; toxic waste; environmental risks. As a most relevant finding, the study revealed that the inappropriate disposal of medication causes environmental and public health impacts. It is concluded that there is a need to raise awareness among the population so that solutions are established for the disposal and treatment of residues from medicines and that the pharmacist must take ownership of the attributions acquired by him by the current legislation.
