Abstract

Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are frequent in the clinical routine of the dental surgeon. They have a varied etiology and are characterized by the loss of tooth enamel structure, especially in the cervical regions of the teeth. As a result of these injuries, patients report painful sensation and Dentin Hypersensitivity (HD) due to exposure of dental tubules. Because they are multifactorial, the treatment of HD will depend on the accurate diagnosis and elimination of the cause. The objective of this literature review was to approach HD in NCCLs, clarify the etiology, mechanism of action, diagnosis and possible treatments. Scientific articles in English and Portuguese were selected, taking as a time frame (2015-2022), in the databases: Cochrane clinical trials register (Cochrane Library), SciELO, medical publications (PubMed), MEDLINE, books and theses. There are in the market and in the literature, a range of devices and protocols for the treatment of HD in these lesions and that knowledge and mastery of causal factors on the part of professionals is essential, in order to correctly address each case. Knowing the therapeutic agents and their mechanisms of action is fundamental in the treatment protocol.
