Abstract

This article aimed to discuss the relevance of diagnosing neurodevelopmental disorders in adulthood and their emotional, social, and identity-related impacts from a psychoanalytic perspective. This is a theoretical study with a qualitative and descriptive approach, based on a literature review of scientific articles published over the past 15 years. The research identified theoretical contributions regarding the implications of late diagnosis in neurodivergent adults, focusing on mental health, identity, social relationships, and inclusion. The psychoanalytic perspective enabled an analysis of how diagnostic recognition can foster subjective reinterpretations and the reorganization of self-image. The results indicated that late diagnosis influences the understanding of previous experiences, promotes self-knowledge, and enables more appropriate interventions. It was also found that a lack of recognition generates psychological distress, stigmatization, and social barriers. The study highlights the importance of sensitive diagnostic practices and inclusive policies that take into account the specific needs of this population. It is concluded that diagnosis in adulthood serves as an essential tool for strengthening identity and facilitating access to support strategies that contribute to a more integrated, functional, and socially inclusive life.
