ETHNOPRIMATOLOGY AND ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

Abstract

This article investigates the fundamental role of Ethnoprimatology in understanding the relationships between human and non-human primates in order to promote the preservation of non-human primates. The problem of the increasing pressure on habitats of non-human primates, resulting from human expansion and human activities, is highlighted. Ethnoprimatology emerges as an interdisciplinary approach that integrates knowledge of Anthropology, Primatology and Environmental Conservation, seeking to understand the cultural, social and ecological interactions between humans and non-human primates. The main objective of the article is to demonstrate the effectiveness of Ethnoprimatology in the preservation and awareness of populations about the importance of non-human primates for ecosystems and human beings, recognizing and valuing local knowledge and practices related to primates. In this sense, we use bibliographical sources about Ethnoprimatology and methodologies used by ethnoprimatologists to meet the proposed objective. Ethnoprimatology promotes a greater understanding of the ecological and social needs of these species, contributing to more effective and sustainable conservation strategies. In short, the article highlights the potential of Ethnoprimatology as an essential tool in promoting harmonious coexistence between human and non-human primates, essential for global environmental conservation.
