Abstract

The relationship between society and the mentally ill for a few centuries could be described as periods of hospitalization in psychiatric institutions that consisted of prolonged periods of seclusion. According to Marques et al. (2018, p. 408), in the past, “[...] society proclaimed some negative implications, such as fear and rejection, as the ‘crazy’ was considered incapable, irrational and dangerous. These conceptions reinforced stigma and discrimination against the ‘mentally ill’.”
