NURSING CARE AND PATIENT SAFETY IN ICU

Abstract

The environment and work within an intensive care unit is intense and complex, nursing must be prepared to meet the patient, family and the needs of the team and the sector at any time, thus providing the necessary safety to everyone, with qualified assistance. however, there are many challenges for this to occur. this work aims to identify challenges related to patient safety for the nursing team in the icu. an integrative review was carried out, using the following descriptors nursing care, critical care, nursing and patient safety. 310 articles were found and after the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 9 articles remained to compose the study. the results showed that the main triggering factors for the occurrence of harm to the patient by the nursing team are due to the professional's lack of qualifications in the daily routine of the sector, the lack of communication between professionals and family members, the risk management of prescribed and administered medications , in addition to unscheduled extubation due to poor tube fixation and pressure injuries due to failure to change position. it is concluded, therefore, that there are several reasons for the occurrence of harm to the patient by the nursing team, and that if the work system is not remodeled, this professional can further compromise patients in terms of patient safety and, consequently, harm the entire work team, the patient, their families and the institution.
