Abstract

Piercing is an ancient decoration practice that can serve for beauty, ritual, social or religious purposes. Until the present day, this practice continues to be of popular interest for several reasons, being used as a sexual attraction for men or women. The jewelry used for lip or tongue piercing is usually in the shape of a dumbbell with a central bar and two spherical ends. Several adverse reactions experienced by patients with this type of piercing have been reported and include: pain, postoperative tissue inflammation with potential airway obstruction, prolonged bleeding, decreased taste perception, difficulty in chewing and swallowing, enamel fractures, and periodontal damage. , bone loss and gingival recession, the main focus of this literature review. Gingival recession is a pathology characterized by the displacement of the gingiva towards the tip of the tooth root, causing a decrease in the size of the gingiva. In more complex cases, check whether the exposure of the tooth is associated with pain and unpleasant aesthetics. It is a process that appears slowly and that gets worse over time, it can affect one or more teeth. Among the symptoms of gingival retraction, the patient may present the following symptoms: bleeding, whether in brushing, flossing, tooth sensitivity, which can also happen spontaneously, pain in the gums and teeth, softened or unsteady teeth and bad breath, which can also cause aesthetic discomfort to the patient. In the study, the concept and history of piercing will be reported, as well as the concept of gingival recession, its classification, diagnosis, treatment and the role of the dentist in this pathology.
