Abstract

Kegel exercises were first described in 1948 by Arnold Kegel, its concept basically consists of exercises for contraction and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles. Studies have proven the effectiveness of treatment applied to pregnant women, since the risk of urinary incontinence (UI) increases during pregnancy and postpartum. Objective: to demonstrate the benefits of practicing kegel exercises applied to pregnant women. Methodology: this is an exploratory, descriptive and quantitative research carried out through bibliographical research. Final considerations: it was found that Kegel exercises can bring several benefits to the quality of life of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. The results obtained are related to the increase in endurance and muscle strength, contributing to the improvement of urinary incontinence.
