Mastitis is inflammation, accompanied by breast pain, erythema, fever, and engorgement. Exclusive breastfeeding should continue for up to 6 months, with the possibility of continuing for up to 2 years. Objective: To elucidate the beneficial effects of probiotics in this context, the adverse effects described, and the safety of their use. Methods: This is a qualitative, retrospective, cross-sectional study conducted through a literature review. The databases used were: National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and the Regional Portal of the Virtual Health Library (VHL), using the descriptors "Mastitis" and "Probiotics." Articles published in the last 10 years (2015-2025) were included; controlled clinical trials; full-text and free articles; and duplicates or those not addressing the topic were excluded, totaling 10 articles. The main effects observed were: reduced mastitis rates, recurrence, pain, and breastfeeding cessation (6 articles), and diarrhea/flatulence (3 articles). However, there are few adverse events, without the need to discontinue treatment. Given the above, probiotics are recommended because they have more benefits than risks compared to antibiotics. Further studies are needed to clarify tolerance and safety and support their formal indication in this population.
