Breastfeeding is a natural and essential process for the healthy development of the baby, providing nutrients, immune protection, and a unique emotional bond between mother and child. However, some mothers and babies may face challenges throughout this process, such as the presence of a short lingual frenulum, also known as ankyloglossia. This study used a review of the scientific literature to investigate the interference of ankyloglossia in breastfeeding, analyzing its impacts on latch, suction, and maternal health. The findings indicate that ankyloglossia impairs tongue movement, hindering efficient breastfeeding and causing discomfort for both mother and baby. In addition, the study discusses diagnostic and treatment options, highlighting frenotomy as an effective intervention to improve breastfeeding. It concludes that early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to ensure breastfeeding success in cases of ankyloglossia.
