Abstract

This digital book entitled "Education in the State Prisons of Pelotas and Rio Grande" aims to explore and analyze the education offered within the prison institutions of these two cities located in the extreme south of Rio Grande do Sul. Understanding that education is a universal right and a powerful tool for social transformation, this study seeks to understand how educational programs have impacted the lives of prisoners and contributed to the process of resocialization.
The content of the book is divided into three chapters, each addressing fundamental aspects of prison education:
Chapter 1: introductory preambles on prison education
In this chapter, we introduce the concept of education within the prison system, highlighting its importance for the social reintegration of prisoners. The historical and legal contexts that underpin the provision of education in prisons will be presented, as well as the challenges and opportunities found in this specific environment.
The book then addresses Education as a tool for resocialization
Here, the focus is on analyzing how education directly contributes to the resocialization process of prisoners. The chapter explores the benefits of education in reducing criminal recidivism, improving employment prospects after serving a sentence, and strengthening the self-esteem and citizenship of individuals deprived of liberty.
In the last chapter, entitled: Methodology of education in prisons
In the third and final chapter, we address the methodologies used in prison education in the cities of Pelotas and Rio Grande. The teaching methods, specific pedagogical approaches for the prison environment, and the adaptations needed to deal with the socio-educational profile of prisoners will be discussed. This chapter also compares the practices adopted in both cities, analyzing the results and differences observed.
This digital book is intended for educators, researchers, professionals in the prison system, and all those interested in the intersection between education and justice. By the end of this reading, we hope that readers will be able to understand, in an introductory way, the challenges and potential of prison education and its importance in the context of public safety and social justice.
