Abstract

Sensory stimulation as an early diagnostic and therapeutic method to prevent the sequelae of brain injuries in newborns was developed in Hungary by Katona. It is based on the concept of plasticity of the young nervous system and considers the repetition of certain therapeutic maneuvers that are based on sensorimotor patterns of neurodevelopment, specific to humans and very similar to the motor activities of adults. These sensorimotor functions are activated by gravity through the vestibular system and are under the control of the basal ganglia, the reticular system, and the paleocerebellum. The present study aims to understand the clinical diagnostic and therapeutic utility of sensory stimulation as a method of preventing sequelae of brain injury in neonates and infants with risk factors for neurological damage. Methodologically, a literature or bibliographic review was used, the purpose of which is to carry out research in databases and scientific journals on the subject in question. The results in relation to the prevalence of databases in the studies of the final sample of 13 articles. It is concluded that sensory stimulation is an eminently clinical method, its practice offers not only therapeutic potential, but also to be a very valuable tool in pediatric and neonatal diagnosis.
