Abstract

This study aimed to address physiotherapy interventions in the maintenance of potential organ donors in the adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU). To carry out this research, we conducted an integrative review using relevant databases in the health area, starting from the following question: What are the physiotherapy interventions in maintaining potential organ donors in the adult ICU? To select the studies, we adopted inclusion criteria and the review was carried out through the Rayyan online platform. A descriptive analysis approach was used and the initial sample comprised 660 articles of different methodological designs, of which 07 were chosen after applying the eligibility criteria. The studies identified indicate that the main interventions include maintaining lung function, controlling pain and discomfort, preventing musculoskeletal complications, and communicating with the transplant team. In addition, tests are requested to open protocols, such as apnea, cough reflex and mechanical ventilation adjustments. These interventions not only aim at the patient's physical stability, but also at preserving the viability of the organs to be donated, thus increasing the chances of successful transplants and the possibility of saving lives. Close collaboration between physical therapy and the transplant team and training of families are essential components of this process.
