Introduction: Chronic Kidney Disease is a worldwide public health problem due to the high rates of morbidity and mortality and the high cost of treatment. The objective of this study was to analyze mortality due to chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) under the focus of Multiple Causes of Death. Methodology: Deaths by CRI, code N18 of ICD 10, were analyzed from adults to residents of Brazilian municipalities, with more than 100 thousand inhabitants, from 2011 to 2013. The data were obtained through the Mortality Information System, available in DATASUS-MS. The study focused on the multiple cause of death approach and was used to obtain the information, the Multiple Causes of Death Tab. Results: Of the total of 1,863,669 deaths of adults over 20 years old, CRI was a basic cause in 10,087 deaths, corresponding to 0.54% and multiple cause of death in 78,938 deaths (4.2% of the total). It was found that CRI was mentioned 7.8 times higher in the multiple cause approach. The main underlying causes of these deaths were diabetes and hypertensive diseases and the causes of death associated with CRI were, in the majority, nonspecific causes. Conclusions: The multiple causes of death approach has made CRI visible, underestimated as underlying cause and usually neglected in relation to others, by determining the selection rules. When determining the profile of causes of these deaths, the research made possible the orientation of preventive actions and health promotion aimed at primary health care, the entry point of patients into the system.
