Brazil, through, mainly, its your economic development showcased in the last two decades, has established itself in the international system as an emerging power that intends, along with other countries, to participate in a more active way in the dynamics of the system. In the scope of Foreign Policy and Sea Power, the country has been developing an affirmative and pragmatic narrative for its strategic surroundings, with emphasis on the South Atlantic. Thus, the present paper aims, through a bibliographical and documental analysis, at analyzing the components that make this ocean so important for the country and systematizing the evolution of Brazilian thinking on Maritime Strategy up to the Defence White Paper of 2012. Allowing, in conclusion, to assert that the joint action of the Foreign Policy and the Navy in the region will constitute the basis for the creation of Brazil’s desired political and military leadership in the South Atlantic, based on the assumptions contained in the National Defense Strategy.
