Introduction: Cardiac surgery is an intervention that is faced with fear and hesitation, among patients and their families. Despite this, this is a widely adopted and realized feature. Taking into account its complexity and, in general, the risks that arise from any type of surgical procedure, it is extremely important to discuss behaviors that make this context safer. Objective: To highlight, in the context of health care in cardiac surgery, the main nursing care aimed at patient safety in the perioperative period, preventing complications and acting focally so that the patient has a good prognosis. Method: The present work was built from the literature review method, with an integrative approach. The bibliographic survey was carried out from November to December, of the year 2021, in the BVS, LILACS, sciELO and PubMed databases. In the search for data, the following terms were used: “cardiac surgery”, “patient safety”, “nursing care”. Results and Discussion: The analysis of the studies that were part of this integrative review comprised the analysis of three categories that describe the answer to the guiding question proposed in this study, namely: (i) Patient identification; (ii) Efficient intercommunication in establishing surgical patient safety; (iii) Infection prevention and control measures. Conclusion: The care that refers to patient safety is concentrated in the most basic stages of the nursing service, not limited to the specificity of cardiac surgery, but rather, taking into account the risks that the patient is exposed to in the surgery process in all surgical periods.
