Abstract

The reconstruction of the alveolar process in the posterior region of the maxilla is very frequent, for the functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of partial or total edentulous patients with dental implants. And it has become an increasingly safer reality, therefore, knowing the characteristics of these tissues and biomaterials is essential for success. Most of the studied authors reported that the success of Sinus lift with the use of synthetic HA biomaterial in bone formation is significant, they also stated that in these studies there was formation of new bone with large gaps of osteocytes surrounded by HA particles and several multinucleated cells were found on the particle surfaces. We can conclude that, according to researched authors, there is a high success rate of osseointegration of implants with the use of synthetic HA biomaterial as grafting in the maxillary sinus. However, some criteria for obtaining grafts with high predictability of success must be observed, such as: ability to produce bone by cellular proliferation of transplanted viable osteoblasts or by osteoconduction of cells along the grafted surface, ability of bone formation by the cells recruited mesenchymal cells, remodeling of bone initially formed in mature lamellar bone, maintenance of mature bone without loss throughout function, ability to stabilize implants when placed simultaneously with the graft, low risk of infection, ease of acquisition, low antigenicity and high level of security. It was found that the most important characteristic of hydroxyapatite is osteoconductivity, which induces bone growth within the graft, promoting stability and maintenance of the implant's volume.
