Abstract

The increase in population life expectancy and the increase in the number of chronic degenerative and sexually transmitted diseases has increased the number of people in need of palliative care. Palliative care, defined as actions that do not cure, but alleviate the patient's physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual suffering, has been a differential in home care, as it interacts with humanized care. To analyze the knowledge of nursing professionals in São Gabriel da Cachoeira on the use of hypodermoclysis in palliative patients, a technique that consists of introducing a catheter subcutaneously for therapeutic purposes in patients undergoing palliative care. This study is a quantitative, exploratory research. When analyzing the knowledge of nursing professionals in São Gabriel da Cachoeira about the use of hypodermoclysis in palliative patients, the absence or low level of knowledge about the technique was noticeable. Considering that mobility in the region is difficult to access, the technique contributes to palliative care in home care, generating the need for training and updating of these professionals for the use of the technique. As a solution to the low knowledge of professionals, the academic training of all health professionals, including physicians, should cover knowledge about the technique, its benefits, contraindications and step by step, favoring its use. The second solution refers to the responsibility of health institutions to train professionals to use the technique. These solutions are presented, given that the results indicate that part of the professionals claim not to use the technique due to lack of information and medical prescription. Considering the findings, it is concluded that nursing professionals in São Gabriel da Cachoeira have little knowledge about hypodermoclysis. Thus, given that there are patients in need of palliative care, it is essential that these professionals are trained for the practice, so that patients and the health system enjoy the benefits of the technique, in hospitals and at home. The results indicate that the professionals' knowledge and experience about the hypodermoclysis technique is low. Of the participating professionals, 73% nurses and 27% nursing technicians, most do not have knowledge about the technique step by step, nor about its benefits. Of the indicated nurses, only 19% have specialization, however, that does not match the technique or palliative care. Most professionals do not have experience in using the technique and have doubts related to the prescription of the technique. It is concluded that procedures, training and prescriptions must be carried out in order to encourage the practice of the technique in palliative care.
