Submitting a patient to a surgery procedure represents a situation of concern and stress for the patient, mentally and physically. To reduce the effects of this situation, a minimally invasive surgical technique was developed, known as laparoscopic surgery, which is brilliantly replacing the traditional “open” surgery. It consists of a specialized technique for performing operative procedures, which is made through minimal incisions measuring about 1 centimeter, and special instruments. Thus, the surgeon has access to the desired cavity, minimally injuring the patient's body. The aim of this review was to analyze the benefits of laparoscopic surgery over traditional surgery. For this, a search was performed for previous works on the PubMed, LILACS and SciELO platforms, and a total of 25 articles were analysed after using the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Through the analyzed studies, it was possible to conclude that laparoscopy brings great benefits to patients, both considering the surgical procedures and in the postoperative period. The option for this type of surgery reduces sedation time and surgical total duration for most patients, in addition to significantly reducing post-surgical hospitalization, anticipating hospital discharge. Furthermore, it proved to be significant in relation to survival and personal quality of life, improving and accelerating postoperative recovery. Thus, it can be seen that laparoscopic surgery, in most cases, is the best option for the patient.
