THE IMPORTANCE OF PHARMACEUTICAL MONITORING IN PROMOTING THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF POLYMEDICATED ELDERLY POPULATION

Pharmaceutical care is an essential factor in the health strategy, because in the relationship between the pharmaceutical professional and the patient, it is possible to develop education and awareness strategies regarding the correct use of medicines, in order to promote the improvement of the well-being of the population . Therefore, this article is developed with the general objective of understanding the importance of the pharmacist in the pharmacotherapeutic follow-up in the polymedicated elderly population. For that, we opted for a systematic review of the literature, of articles published in the Pubmed, Scielo and Google Scholar databases. As a result, 18 articles were obtained, which were categorized into: Factors associated with polypharmacy in the elderly population; The use of potentially inappropriate medications in the elderly population; and Contributions of pharmaceutical care for polymedicated elderly patients. It is concluded that the elderly are more prone to unwanted occurrences, which increase comorbidities and length of hospital stay, due to the use of potentially inappropriate medications, with pharmaceutical care being essential as an effective health strategy in order to reduce risks. polypharmacy, raising awareness about the correct use of medication and improving the quality of life of this population.
