Civil construction is an area that requires knowledge of the language used in the projects for better understanding between designer and in charge, as an attempt to reduce the generation of waste in the works. It is known that communication is indispensable in interpersonal relationships, being a powerful tool in organizations. Thus, this article aims to demonstrate that the failure of communication causes waste of materials in the works of Santarém and consequently, it increases waste generation, impacting on the sustainability of construction. The methodology used was field research, using a questionnaire with objective questions directed to the designer and in charge. With this, it was possible to verify that the lack of clarity in the projects is one of the factors of waste of materials in works. In this context, it is inferable that if the communication is not clear the work can become more costly, in addition to bringing impacts to the environment with increased waste it is possible to dispose of incorrect disposal.
