Abstract

Hysterectomy is the second most performed surgery in women of reproductive age. Thus, it shows the importance of comparing the approaches for its performance, such as the gold standard through vaginal and video laparoscopy, aiming to analyze the number of procedures performed, costs, average hospitalization, mortality and deaths. According to the results, 2,145 vaginal hysterectomies were performed in the state of Rio de Janeiro in the last 5 years and 186 videolaparoscopic hysterectomies . Both procedures presented low mortality and number of deaths, being 0.05% and 1, respectively for surgery by vaginal and 0% and 0 for video surgery. The vaginal route is the most used in Rio de Janeiro due to its postoperative advantages, lower cost when compared to video surgery and, mainly, due to the lack of technique by doctors and residents to perform laparoscopy.
