Beta-lactams. Indiscriminate use. Consequences.Abstract
This article sought to know the characteristics of beta-lactams and the importance of rational use of this drug, as well as the consequences of indiscriminate use. This is a literature review, where data were collected from electronic sources, such as SciELO Brasil, LILACS, PubMED, articles published between 2010 and 2022 were selected, in addition to books associated with the theme. Beta-lactams have a different chemical configuration, due to the side chain that differs between each component. The class includes penicillins, cephalosporins, cabarpenems, monobactams and lactamase inhibitors. This group has high bioavailability, as it does not show strong binding with albumin. Its use can cause neutropenia, nephritis, diarrhea, nausea, in addition, a history of allergy associated with the individual and the drugs can result in anaphylactic attack or severe hypersensitivity. Furthermore, the risks of bacterial resistance increase as a result of irrational use, which is essential for pharmaceutical guidance on this topic.
