PARASITOLOGY OF FECES IN PEACOCKS FROM A PROPERTY IN CACOAL-RO

Peacocks are birds belonging to the species Pavo cristatus, originating in India and later spread throughout the world. In Brazil, they are raised as ornamental birds along with other domestic birds, and can be infected by various parasites and cause clinical signs of diarrhea, loss of appetite and death. Given the high sensitivity of peacocks to worms, this work aims to report the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites and their symptoms in peacocks on a property located in Cacoal-RO. On a property that raises peacocks, pheasants and turkeys, some chicks, approximately three months old, had severe watery diarrhea and death. Samples of the birds' feces were collected, which were analyzed in a laboratory in the region. Some chicks had a weakened body condition, skeletal muscle atrophy, dry feathers and flaws and some had sunken eyes and head down. In these, the presence of Ascarid eggs was observed, worms that are highly pathogenic in puppies, causing diarrhea and progressive weight loss. While the adult birds showed infection by Ascarids and Whipworms. All birds were treated with fembendazole-based vermifuge powder mixed in the feed, and intramuscular injection of tylosin.
