The tongue is an important structure that influences speech, nutrition, swallowing and breastfeeding. Ankyloglossia (or tongue-tie) is an anomaly characterized by an abnormally short lingual frenulum that limits tongue movements, impairing its ability to perform its functions. The most common surgical techniques for lingual frenulum removal are frenotomy, frenectomy, frenuloplasty, and laser surgery. The literature reports that ankyloglossia is considered rare and can be found in babies, adolescents and adults. The objective of this work is to present a review of the literature on ankyloglossia, its diagnosis and treatment.
