This literature review proposes a discussion about the positive and negative impacts generated on the psychomotor and social development of institutionalized children, as well as on the approach to this process. Data collection was carried out in February 2021 in the databases: SciELO and Virtual Health Library - BIREME, with a selection of 10 articles, 1 book and two Brazilian documents: The Statute of the Child and Adolescent and the Primary Care Notebook Child Health: Child Growth and Development. The search results guide that the organism functions occur in a satisfactory way, being necessary that environmental and biological stimuli are present. However, the absence of some of these can ctreate risks, slowing not only development, but growth as well. Among the factors, the environmental one stands out, which has institutionalization as a detriment to development, but which can represent a positive stimulus, in the case where the family environment where the child was exposed was not favorable. However, one must analyze specifically the previous context in which the child was and the reception that is offered, or not, by the institutions. In this sense, it discusses necessary actions aimed at the employees of the institutions, in order to allow better working conditions and reduce turnover, which has been causing insecurity in institutionalized children.
