The lightning rod was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1752, when he performed a dangerous experiment with a piece of metal wire to fly a paper kite and observed the electrical charge of lightning flowing through the device. He also demonstrated that metal rods could act as electrical conductors when in contact with the Earth's surface, thus inventing the lightning rod. Thus, this work intends to report the operation and functions of the lightning rod in the distribution network through a literature review. When lightning strikes a pole, the discharge also travels through high voltage wires. For this reason, it is recommended to remove all equipment from the socket to avoid damage. The discharge can cause current spikes that spread through the network and damage the devices. Do not use plug-in electrical equipment during a thunderstorm. As the discharge can spread along the wire and be transmitted to the ground through the iron structure of the pole, someone close to the pole (on the ground) may not be hit.
