Abstract

Contagious Infectious Disease, Syphilis is an infection caused by Treponema Pallidum and can be transmitted sexually, by blood transfusion, breastfeeding, contact with contaminated objects and in a vertical manner. This represents a major public health problem due to the increased risk for numerous fetal conditions, such as perinatal death, preterm birth, low birth weight, congenital anomalies, active syphilis in the newborn and long-term sequelae, such as deafness and neurological impairment. Despite having low- cost and effective treatment, syphilis in pregnant women is a worldwide concern, due to the great increase in its incidence over the past few years. The present study, using data collected in the DATASUS Disease and Notification Information System, seeks to highlight the increase of this preventable disease in São Bernardo do Campo, the fourth largest municipality in the São Paulo, Brazil, in terms of population and budget revenue realized, as well as report the epidemiological data of pregnant women affected by syphilis between the years 2010 and 2019.
