CARCINOGENIC OR ANTICARCINOGENIC EFFECT OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF JABUTICABA PEEL (PLINIA CAULIFLORA): AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

The species Plinia cauliflora, which produces jabuticaba as a fruit, stands out within the Brazilian flora for its medicinal properties. Among the components of jabuticaba, the bark has the highest concentration of substances of interest to health, in addition to its antitumor activity. The objective of this project was to carry out a bibliographic survey of articles related to the carcinogenic or anticarcinogenic potential of jabuticabas, especially the aqueous extract of P. cauliflora bark. The present study addresses an integrative review in which the guiding question was used: “Does the aqueous extract of jabuticaba bark (P. cauliflora) have any carcinogenic or anticarcinogenic effect?” According to Wu's review; long; Kennelly (2013), the edible parts of jabuticaba contain evidence of cytotoxic, antiproliferative, antimutagenic, cell regeneration and, especially, anticancer activity due to the concentration of anthocyanins. Lamas et. al (2020) notes that jabuticaba bark extract reduces the spectrum of oxidative and inflammatory molecules in a lesion caused by prostate cancer. Lin et. al. (2016) plant parts or extracts of P.caluliflora may have a beneficial effect against leukemia, as it contains compounds such as ellagic acid, quercetin and anthocyanins, important in cancer prevention and antitumor activity. No carcinogenic effects of jabuticaba were detected so far. However, many studies show numerous anticancer potentials of several species of jabuticaba, but these studies are still very incipient, which requires more research focused on other types of cancer. The types of cancer detected in this review were colon, prostate, breast and leukemia cancer, and the antioxidant potential of jabuticabas was mainly verified.
