Abstract

The look of official history on the history of Brazil, especially in textbooks, brings history from a point of view, in many literatures, extremely partial, focused mainly on historical facts and personalities. In this view, it is possible to read between the lines of the speech how heroic representatives of the Brazilian political system were and/or actions arising from them. In this context, what is society's view, via literature, on such systems and/or acts? And the black population within these government systems, what did they feel? Seeking to answer such questions, this work aims to make a reading of the social situation of black people within a specific period of the Monarchy and the early years of the Brazilian Republic from three literary texts, namely: “Navio negreiro” (Negreiro Ship) (excerpts from the poem), by Castro Alves; “November 15th” and “O momento”, by Lima Barreto. Furthermore, it will seek to identify and analyze the look of the poetic-self and the narrator on their respective historical-political periods. For this, it uses theoretical support (FAUSTO, 1995; NATAL, 2017; SILVA, 2012; PESAVENTO, 2003 etc.). One of the conclusions that it was possible to reach is that in both texts the suffering of black people, although no longer enslaved, is perpetuated from one regime to another.
