Root canal irrigating solutions are of salutary importance for the success of endodontic therapy, reducing the pathogenic microbiota and its metabolites, providing the root canal system with cleaning, decontamination and tissue dissolution. The objective of the present work is to elucidate the importance of irrigating solutions for root canal systems used during endodontic treatment. This is a literature review, in which the databases used for the theme were Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Virtual Health Library (BVS) and Pubmed, with the keywords used “EDTA”; "Sodium hypochlorite"; "Chlorhexidine"; “irrigating solutions”; “root canal system”, where scientific articles in English and Portuguese were selected, using criteria for inclusion of works published in the years 2016 to 2022, and which carefully selected those that addressed the proposed theme, in accordance with selection and relevance criteria. The use of irrigating solutions becomes essential for sanitizing the root canal system, irrigants such as Sodium Hypochlorite and Chlorhexidine can be used, which associated with the use of EDTA, a chelating solution, are able to enhance cleaning and the reduction of microorganisms in the root canals, moreover, it is emphasized that the choice of the solution for endodontic therapy stems from the knowledge about their.
