Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum, and can be transmitted sexually, vertically or hematogenously. Of the many diseases transmitted during the puerperium and childbirth, syphilis has the highest rates of vertical transmission, especially in the primary and secondary phases, which increases the chance of abortions and perinatal deaths. This study evaluates epidemiological factors such as hospitalization rate, number of deaths and mortality rate in children under one year of age. In this way, results were obtained that led us to the conclusion that the events of congenital syphilis are growing over the years, due to problems such as low education, sexual promiscuity, low socioeconomic level and, mainly, the lack of appropriate prenatal. In an attempt to reverse this scenario, the Federal Government with the Ministry of Health has been implementing several programs that encourage and provide basic information about STDs, prenatal care and the treatment of the disease.
