Biogas is a type of gas produced from decomposing organic matter, it can be used to produce electricity in a less aggressive way to the environment compared to existing methods. Its production is mediated by biodigester equipment that can be implemented in landfills, swine production plants or even in agricultural production sites. As a means of increasing knowledge about this technique and identifying the applicability of biogas as a sustainable and economic source, the present research aimed to analyze, through bibliographic reference, the use of biogas as a sustainable and economic alternative for energy generation and the minimization of environmental impacts. Different projects analyzed pointed out that biogas is a less aggressive gas to the environment and also collaborates with the reduction of electric consumption of energy concessionaires. However, its implementation involves a high financial cost, suggesting that the project involves partnerships with the government or private companies. It is concluded that biogas is a sustainable proposal for energy production that can collaborate with the sustainable and economic development of the regions where it is established.
