Abortion is defined by the World Health Organization as the expulsion of the fetus <22 weeks or <500g, which may be early or late. According to the 2016 national survey on abortion, one in five women up to 40 years old reported that they had already committed at least one abortion. The objective of the present study is to evaluate maternal mortality rates due to abortion according to the regions of Brazil in 10 years, seeking to demonstrate levels of underreporting of these data. DATASUS data was collected from January 2008 to December 2018, analyzing the number of hospitalizations due to abortion, deaths due to abortion, by age group and regions in Brazil. In the analyzed period, there were 2,286,876 hospitalizations due to pregnancies that resulted in abortion, with the Southeast region having the highest incidence (845,032) and the Midwest with the lowest index (157,869). The total number of deaths was 797 and the total expenditure on these hospitalizations in 10 years was R $ 521,099,594.21. Thus, it is concluded that the Southeast stands out, which may be due to its greater availability of resources. Therefore, a high level of underreporting can be deduced, highlighting the need for measures that expand accessibility and the reception of these women in vulnerable situations, through a multidisciplinary team and specialized professionals in these cases, in addition to training to complete the death certificate.seeking to minimize complications and deaths.
