Abstract

Introduction: Periodontal disease is a chronic infection, being the second leading cause of dental pathology in the human population. PD is defined as an infectious process, chronic inflammation, characterized by a rapid inflammatory response of the host to microorganisms and their microbial products. It is considered a broad risk factor between Periodontal Disease and periodontitis, on the other hand, it makes it difficult to control them. The immune system plays an important role in regulating the interrelationship between these two diseases. Effects of diabetes on periodontal tissue and studies of periodontitis as a possible factor. Methods: A systematic review of studies associated with typical diabetic complications was performed. Google Scholar, Scielo and PubMed search base, the words “periodontal disease”, “diabetes”, “type I diabetes mellitus”, “children and adolescents” were used as descriptors, the articles used in the present work were from the years 2013 to 2022. The aim of this study was to establish the relationship between periodontitis in children (7 to 12 years old) and adolescents (14 to 19 years old) with type 1 diabetes mellitus, through a literature review. The literature suggests a relationship between periodontal disease and systemic disease in children and adolescents. Conclusion: It is concluded that PD comprises a group of inflammatory infections that affect periodontal tissue and can be triggered by a variety of local and systemic factors. In addition to the higher prevalence, an association between PD severity and DM progression has been found in many studies. Individuals of all age groups are susceptible to the disease and gingivitis, a reversible disease limited to the gum tissue that is common in childhood and early adolescence.
