Individuals with diabetes have several physiological changes that are responsible for attenuating their immune capacity and inflammatory response, so these patients are more susceptible to infections. As a result of these changes, the oral cavity ends up being one of the most affected sites, with periodontal disease as an example. Therefore, the present study aims to highlight the interrelationship between diabetes and periodontal disease. For this, a bibliographic review was carried out in databases such as Scielo, Pubmed, and Google Scholar for articles related to the topic. Individuals with diabetes have several physiological changes that are responsible for attenuating their immune capacity and inflammatory response, so these patients are more susceptible to infections. As a result of these changes, the oral cavity ends up being one of the most affected sites, with periodontal disease as an example. Thus, the relationship between these two pathologies is evident and the medical team must know this interrelation to refer these patients for a dental evaluation. In addition, it is expected that this patient will be accompanied by a multidisciplinary team to ensure better results in their treatment.
