Abstract

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the discipline of oral medicine in which a wide range of disorders affecting the facial complex and skeleton, including the jaws and oral cavity, are diagnosed and treated. In general, it can be said that maxillofacial surgery is the discipline of dentistry that tries to solve health problems and pathologies of the mouth through surgery. Laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) is defined as a beam of light emitted and amplified by an electronic device, whose uses and applications have undergone several changes since the first. Studies indicate that it is a safe therapeutic modality, with low side effects. It has an athermal nature, so the laser does not destroy tissue or cause other damage associated with high power lasers. Due to its importance, the objective of this work was to discuss the concept of maxillofacial surgery, the historical evidence of the use of laser, the Mechanism of action, its therapeutic effects, the therapeutic capacity of low intensity laser, the types and their possible contraindications.
