DENTAL MANAGEMENT IN PATIENTS WITH AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDER

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is defined as a neurodevelopmental disorder of biological origin that appears in early childhood characterized by an alteration in reciprocal social relationships, communication, language, imagination, governed behaviors and stereotyped activities. To date, there are no properly defined oral manifestations in autistic patients, but some frequent characteristics are identified, such as bruxism, malocclusions, cardia and periodontal problems. The dental management of individuals with ASD is a challenge for the dentist, especially the pediatric dentist, as these children do not allow adequate communication, they respond anxiously to any sound, visual and olfactory stimulus. With the completion of the work, it was possible to conclude that new laws are created to ensure dental treatment. it was also possible to see that the dental surgeon focused on the care of people with ASD, must keep constantly updated, and connected with other areas that can help the treatment, it is also important that this professional establish a contact of trust and security for the patient. Finally, it is essential to say the importance of the dental professional in the health of patients with special needs.
