VERBAL TRANSITIVITY: A FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE VERB ACHAR IN BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE

Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the use of the verb achar and its degree of transitivity in the oral and written modalities, that is, the textual types (narratives, descriptions and reports) of the informants of Higher Education and Literacy contained in the database in the corpus Speech & Grammar: the spoken and written language in the city of Natal. The research seeks to identify the transitivity process of the respective verb from a communicative context, to which the notions of referential event and speech event at the moment of interaction must be considered, in order to configure the mechanisms and parameters of the transitivity of the verb. From a methodological point of view, we were inspired by an investigation of a qualitative and quantitative nature, since the analyzes of its data focus on the discussion of the facts researched within qualitative and bibliographic variables, as well as quantifiable data related to the frequency of use of the verb achar. As a result, we indicate that when the context is considered, according to the functional view, other verbs appear in the communicative environment to complete the semantic sense, as well as highlight the pragmatic aspects that direct the understanding of the purpose and event of communication, resulting in a greater Transitivity application index according to the parameters of Hopper and Thompson (1980).
