The irrational use of medicines in Brazil is considered one of the biggest in the world. They are chemical products that cannot be thrown in the common trash, although this is the main destination for disposal of these substances. There is currently a lot of debate about the final destination of expired medicines and those that are in disuse and stored in homes. However, the problems caused by the use, improper disposal, and who are responsible for disposing of these drugs are unknown. During the study, some problems caused by incorrect disposal were identified, such as: water and soil contamination. It is also noticed that the population's lack of information about the destination of leftover medicines contributes to inappropriate disposal and that it would be important to inform, guide and make society aware of the responsibility for reducing pollutants generated by medicines. This article sought to describe the main problems caused by improper disposal of medicines and some solutions to reduce the practice of incorrect disposal, preventing this waste from being thrown anywhere or in any way.
